What is a Precinct Chair?

We consider the Precinct Chair as the most vital grassroots organizer at the precinct level and the representative of the precinct to the party.  Among their important work, Precinct Chairs

  • Organize their precinct by getting to know the precinct and the voters
  • Represent their precinct at the County Executive Committee (CEC) meeting
  • Encourage Democrats in their precinct to vote
  • Act as the liaison between elected officials and people in their precincts
  • Help to find election workers
  • Work with other Democrats to dress and work their precinct polling places for Election Day, pass out literature, and report pertinent information to the Democratic Party and campaigns
  • Understand the Texas Democratic Party Rules and Texas Election Code
  • Organize their Precinct Convention
  • Serve their community and have fun doing it!
  • The Texas Election Code describes the Precinct Chair as "elected at the general primary by majority vote of the qualified voters of the precinct who vote in the primary on that office, subject to Section 171.0221, or appointed by the county executive committee..."  The Precinct Chair serves a term of 2 years, beginning on the 20th day following the Primary runoff election.

    Requirements

    Filing for Office for 2010-2012

The filing period for precinct chairs to be elected in the March 2 primary for the 2010-2012 term ended on January 4.   Those elected in the March 2 primary will be sworn in at the May, 2010 CEC meeting.

We are accepting late applications in precincts where no one applied during the filing period (See the list of applicants who applied during the filing period).  Late applicants will be interviewed by the Precinct Recruitment and Training Committee, which will announce its recommendations at every CEC meeting in which there is an opportunity to fill vacancies (This requires a majority of current precinct chairs to be present).  For the May CEC meeting, the cut-off date for late applicants to be considered is Monday, April 26.  Please submit a notarized
precinct chair application at the party office on Culebra at Peacock (1 block east of 24th Street, behind the Rios Law Firm).
